Purpose of CG Coaches

The purpose of Midtown CG Coaches is to provide oversight and care for the leaders of 3-5 Midtown CGs. Though a coach’s leadership will impact the members of the CGs, the primary people that a Coach is leading are the CG leaders. This is accomplished through encouraging their leadership in the Gospel (disciples), providing wisdom in care situations (family), and catalyzing CG multiplication and missional collaboration (sent-ones).

Qualifications

Character

CG Coaches are expected to maintain a deacon level of character qualifications as outlined in 1 Timothy 3:8-13. The Coach is also expected to be members and actively tithing to Sojourn Midtown.

Competency

In most cases, Coaches should have led a CG at some point while attending Sojourn Midtown.

Capacity

CG Coaching is their primary area of ministry and leadership at Sojourn Midtown. Coaches must have space in their schedule for each of the Coaching commitments (see below). This means they will make sacrifices in their schedules to be present at all required events. If there is a conflict with other Sojourn service commitments, Coaches are expected to prioritize their Coaching responsibilities.

CG Coaches are asked to commit to serving for at least 1 full ministry year (either August-July (12 months) or January through the following July (18 months)).

Chemistry

Coaches are to embrace and embody Midtown’s vision, mission, and values.

Role Description

How do coaches live out the 3 Identities in their role as a Coach?

Disciple

Prayer

Pray regularly for each of your CG leaders. Maybe this is a prayer journal or a time each week dedicated to praying for your CGs. These prayers should be regular and specific.

Encourage CG Leaders in the Gospel

Always seek to remind them of their identity in Christ. We celebrate faithfulness more than fruitfulness. Ask about their walk with the Lord.

Family

Build a Genuine Relationship

We want our Coaches to cultivate relationships with each of their CG leaders. This can be accomplished in many ways. One baseline practice expected among every Coach is the 4-week communication strategy (Strategic, Personal, Tactical, Personal).

Provide Wisdom in Care Situations

As care situations arise in CGs, coaches are the first person CG leaders reach out to. The goal is to equip CG Leaders, not to step in and take over. If/when Coaches feel “over their heads” with a care situation, then the Pastoral team will get involved.

Sent-Ones

Catalyze New Leader Development

Help CG leaders to identify and equip apprentices. Help CGs through the multiplication process.

Missional Collaboration

Coaches are responsible for keeping the vision before your CG leaders and fostering relationships among your leaders that result in collaboration for mission.

Commitments

What are the basic commitments that Coaches are asked to make?

Development

Attend Monthly Coaches Meetings and Annual Coaches Retreat

Coaches meetings occur monthly on a Sunday night over dinner. These are designed to be something you look forward to which is why childcare and catered food are always provided. The annual retreat is usually a full day away. Attendance will be expected at the monthly meetings as well as the retreats as these are essential for developing our coaches and creating team unity.

Participate in CG Leader Syncs

Syncs will occur 3 times in the fall and 3 times in the spring. The first two of each season will be led by the Pastor of Community Life with breakout time in the 2nd half for each CG Region led by CG Coaches. The 3rd sync of each season will be among CG clusters and led exclusively by the CG Coach.

Communication

Regular Communication with Community Life Pastor

Regular communication is essential for maintaining unity and transmitting timely information. CG coaches are asked to respond to the Groups Pastor and/or the Admin Assistant within 48 hours of contact.

Regular Communication with CG Leaders

Deep relationships are built on consistent and clear communication. If you are praying for your CG leaders, let them know how you are praying for them and their groups. If they reach out with a question, get back to them in a thorough and timely manner. Coaches are expected to have meaningful interactions every two weeks.
