Lead Pastor of Sojourn Church Midtown
Hi, I'm Jamaal. I’m the lead pastor of Sojourn Church Midtown and the president of Harbor Network. I’m a native of Chicago, IL, and I received my bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University. I also have an MA in Church Ministries and a doctorate (DEdMin) in Black Church Leadership from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. I’m married to Amber, and we’re the parents of Nia, Josiah, Kayla, Micah, and Judah. Currently, I’m co-authoring a book with Timothy Paul Jones, tentatively titled In Church as It Is In Heaven: Cultivating a Multiethnic Kingdom Culture, which will be published by InterVarsity Press in 2023.
Next time you come to Midtown, if we haven't met yet, please grab me after the service and say hi! I'd love to meet you.

I was born and raised in Savannah, GA. Karen and I were highschool sweethearts, and we have three grown children, Ashley (Jesse), Ryan, and Whitney (Jerred). We have four adorable grandchildren (Asher, Rowan, Coraline, and Reagan). God has given me a variety of careers over the years. I received a BS in Mechanical Engineering at the US Naval Academy and an MDiv and PhD at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
I was a nuclear-powered officer in the US Navy, serving as a plankowner of the aircraft carrier, CVN-71, USS Theodore Roosevelt. I then worked at Michelin Tires in various roles for eight years before being called to ministry.
I served on staff at Sojourn Midtown for 16 years as the Pastor of Care before transitioning to serve full-time as the Founder and Executive Director of Gospel Care Ministries, where we are dedicated to encourage and equip churches toward a culture of discipleship and care. I have written three books—God Redeeming His Bride: A Handbook for Church Discipline; Restore: Changing How We Live & Love; Restoration Story: Why Jesus Matters in a Broken World.
Hi! My name is Andy Cook. I am a non-staff pastor at Sojourn Midtown. My main area of ministry is Care. I have been at Sojourn since its beginning. I have lived in Louisville since the age of 14, so this place is home to me more than anywhere else I have lived.
I work for the International Mission Board as a Microsoft 365 engineer. I am a graduate of Indiana University Southeast. My wife and I have been married since 2010. We have three kids. Jude, Riley, and Ansel.
I love photography, board games, music, and reading. I am a diehard Manchester United fan of 25 years. I am a Cleveland Browns fan as well.
I love the journey that Sojourn has been on for the past 23 years, and most of all I love how our church looks more and more like heaven will every day as we hold to our core value of having a diverse fellowship.
I serve as a non-staff pastor at Sojourn Midtown, and I work as an International Student Advisor at Campbellsville University and a Military Chaplain for the Air Force Reserves. Born and raised in Oklahoma City, OK, I earned my BA in Biblical Languages from Oklahoma Baptist University. I also earned an MDiv in Biblical & Theological Studies from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2014. I'm married to Angie and we can often be found at a friend's house, enjoying the outdoors, or walking our 115lb dog through the neighborhood. I serve as coach to a region of Community Groups for our church and also help with counseling requests.
I am the Founder and President of Seed to Oaks, a Kentucky non-profit that teaches and equips churches to discover and meet the practical needs within their own neighborhoods. Since 2006, I've been developing church-led ministries that serve people living in poverty, including free medical clinics, job training and placements, summer education and afterschool tutoring, community events, and benevolence ministries.
I've spent 14 years as a pastor of mercy ministry. In my non-staff pastor role at Sojourn, I am a governing elder, and I support the other pastors in creating opportunities to serve our neighborhoods.
I have a master’s degree from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and a bachelor’s degree in business from Georgia State University. I'm a Leadership Louisville class of 2020 alumnus, and I commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel in 2018.
My favorite thing to do on my day off is go on a hike.
Our family moved to Louisville in 2007 when I became a professor at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. After serving for several years at Sojourn East, we returned to Sojourn Midtown in 2016.
I earned my Ph.D. at Southern Seminary after completing a master’s degree at Midwestern Seminary in Kansas City and a bachelor of arts at Manhattan Christian College. Along the way, I’ve written or contributed to a couple dozen books, including How We Got the Bible (Rose Publishing) and In Church as It Is in Heaven: Cultivating Multiethnic Kingdom Culture with Pastor Jamaal (InterVarsity Press).
My wife and I met in the summer of 1992 when we were both working at a children’s camp; we said our vows in June 1994 in record-high heat in a church building with a broken air conditioner. Since then, we’ve lived in three states and adopted four children. We enjoy board games, baseball games, traveling to sunny locations, trying new restaurants, and walking Riverfront Park and the Big Four Bridge.
I’m non-staff pastor here at Sojourn. I grew up in Lubbock, Texas and went to Texas A&M University for undergrad (had to navigate some back and forth rivalries there… Texans understand). My wife and I moved to Louisville in 2012 for her study at UofL and mine at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where I received an MDiv.
In my day job, I help run the HR and operations at a local furniture and mattress company. I’m dad to Eleanor, Fielding, and Graham, and we all love the parks and nature in and around our beautiful city of Louisville. In my non-staff pastor role at Sojourn, I primarily serve in our Care ministry, specifically helping to lead Restore.
I’m the Pastor of Care at Sojourn Midtown, where I oversee the ministries of counseling, member care, premarital preparation, and our Restore groups. I'm passionate about cultivating and empowering our church to love and care for one another as God has loved and cared for us. I enjoy golf, chess, and rooting for the University of Kentucky. I'm husband to Sarah and dad to Whitt.
I'm the Executive Director of Harbor Network, a network of churches across the United States providing safety and support to pastors and church leaders as they launch, lead, and multiply thriving churches.
I'm originally from Fayetteville, GA, where I grew up with a twin brother and three sisters. I went to college at Columbus State University in Columbus, GA, where I majored in classical percussion performance. After graduating, I attended Southern Seminary in Louisville, KY, where I received a Master of Divinity in 2013.
I've been married to Anna since 2011. We have two amazing daughters, Harper and Natalie.
We've been members at Sojourn since 2009, and I became a pastor in 2018. My pastoral responsibilities at Midtown include serving on the governing elder body, a subset of the full council of elders that provides oversight to pastor Jamaal; makes high-level financial decisions; and collaborates with Jamaal and the staff to cultivate the vision, mission, values, and beliefs of the church.
I love to hike, run, and swim. I enjoy college football (go Georgia Bulldogs!) and baseball (go Braves!). I love to read. I read a lot of fiction, particularly fantasy novels. I also enjoy working outside in my yard and small garden.
I'm grateful to be part of a church that has deep convictions, genuine love for people and our community, and seeks to reflect heaven in our pursuit of being a gospel-centered, multi-ethnic church.
I was born in the city of Chihuahua, Mexico, where I lived before moving to the US to pursue college education and college athletics. I graduated from the University of Louisville, where I played for the men’s soccer team and earned a bachelor's and a MBA.
I love playing fútbol (soccer) on the weekends and watching the Mexican national team play in international competitions. I also enjoy listening to debates on topics like philosophy, ethics, religion, politics, and science.
As a non-staff elder, I direct the Sojourn Latino ministry. During the week, I work as an international air network planner for UPS. I am married to Rebecca, and we are expecting a baby girl.
Something I love about Sojourn’s church body is the safe space it creates to acknowledge our sin and sorrow, which compels us to bring it to the throne of grace without fear or shame.
My name is Josh, I’m the Pastor of Spiritual Formation at Sojourn Midtown. I’m married to the lovely Amanda Mae, and we have three kids: Caroline, Wells, and Camden.
I met Amanda at Virginia Tech, where I received a B.S. in Biology. Amanda and I got married and moved to Louisville so I could work towards an MDiv at SBTS. We became members at Midtown in 2012, and I joined staff in 2014. I'm currently back at school (hopefully for the last time!) working towards a doctorate in education (EdD).
Our family loves all things Star Wars and Harry Potter. We enjoy riding our bikes together, going on walks, and eating ice cream. Personally, I enjoy riding my road bike, getting into nature for some fly fishing, and perfecting the art of smoked meat. I also love to cheer on the Hokies and the Nationals.
I'm from Jonesborough, Tennessee, where I went to school at Tennessee Tech University to major in Mathmatics and Education. I also got my MDIV from SBTS.
I'm married to Katie, and we have two boys, Bryson and Parker.
I love being outdoors, working out, and traveling.
What I love most about Sojourn is the culture of grace and truth and the diversity.
