We’re all searching for paradise, either in exotic vacations or having the ‘perfect’ home – but the Bible teaches very clearly that true paradise is only found in the presence of God. In I Kings, we see king Solomon build a temple and we see God’s very presence move into that temple. God draws near and Solomon responds with prayer and worship.

Do you think you have a clear idea of where sin is at work in your life? Are you certain you have your act together when it comes to your own heart? In 2 Samuel 12, King David, a man known as one who was after God’s own heart, was deceived by his own sin and continued living a lie. But God pursued David with grace, judged his sin, and ultimately granted him forgiveness. David responds in brokenness and confession.

Our journey through the Old Testament has come to the kingship of David, the boy who killed the giant is now a man and sits on the throne of Israel. King David has had the idea to build God a house so that God could move out of the tent of the tabernacle. But David’s plans are not God’s plans so God tells him so.

This week, pastor Daniel Montgomery looks to the official end of the cycle of death and judges and toward the new era of kings in Israel.

Israel’s demand for a king marks clearly their rejection of God as their true King and I Samuel 8 serves as a mirror, reflecting not only Israel’s hearts but our hearts as well. Like Israel, we place our trust in the wrong things, we resist any word that’s not consistent with our opinions, we are ashamed to be different. And like Israel, we need to return to our King – King Jesus. Week 20 of 52.

Listen in as Pastor Daniel Montgomery looks at the great, little book of Ruth as Sojourn continues a year in the Old Testament. Week 19 of 52.

Ruth is a great short story packed with significance. On the surface, it tells a beautiful love story – a noble man pursuing a noble woman by noble means to a noble end. On a practical level, it establishes David as a legitimate king for Israel through the lineage of Boaz and his act of redeeming Ruth into the people of God. But the most important aspect of the story of Ruth is wrapped up in Boaz as a redeemer and how this pictures what Jesus Christ did for all believers.
