Sojourn Midtown Campus

Daniel Ems

Responsibilities:

I am an Elder, a Community Group Coach; my wife and I occasionally do Pre-Marriage Counseling, and we are training to do Marriage/Individual Counseling. As an elder, I participate in decisions about the vision and direction of Sojourn and interview people who want to become church members.

Family:

I have been married to my lovely wife Amy since 1999. We have a five-year-old daughter, Lauren, and a two-year-old son, Silas. In 2010, we adopted two boys from Ethiopia, Natnial and Minilik.

Hometown:

I was born and raised in Galena, Indiana, a.k.a. Floyds Knobs, a.k.a. the Sunny Side of Louisville.

Education & Experience:

I have a BA from Indiana University Bloomington with a double major in Biology and Environmental Studies and a minor in Geography. Naturally, this has nothing to do with my job as a Market Analyst for Kindred Healthcare. My experience in ministry has been entirely through Sojourn. My wife and I led a community group for four and half years, and I’ve been an elder for about two years.

Vision for your position:

My primary vision is to preach the gospel to hurting people at Sojourn through marriage and individual counseling. In addition, I would like to use what I’m learning about counseling to help Community Group leaders become more effective at caring for the church.

What brought you to Sojourn?

Jeremy and Carrie Quillo invited us when Sojourn was first starting. We came to the first public service and pretty much ever since. The powerful preaching, passionate music, and intentional development of community were unlike anything we’d experienced before.

Favorite movie/ TV show:

My favorite movie is Karate Kid 4. Just kidding, it’s Karate Kid 3. No wait… it’s Red Dawn. Truthfully, my favorite movie is Braveheart or any of the Lord of the Rings movies. My wife and I watch Lost, Heroes, and Arrested Development.

Favorite music/ band:

Recently, I’ve been listening to The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, and The Weakerthans. I’d have to say my favorite artist is Ben Folds.

Favorite book other than the Bible:

Don’t tell anyone, but I really like to read sci-fi novels and fantasy novels. I enjoy books that create a complex universe with detailed history, such as the Lord of the Rings trilogy. My favorites are Robert Jordan’s series The Wheel of Time, Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game series, and Frank Herbert’s Dune series.

Hobbies/interests:

I love playing soccer – indoor or outdoor – but it’s been hard to find time recently. I love to work on my house when I have time (which is never) and I’m a part-time web developer. I read a lot of blogs, too. Probably yours.
